The Dennis Carter Student Athlete Scholarship

James River Media is proud to partner with Play It Again Sports to offer a $1,000 scholarship each to one selected male and female regional high school student athlete. The Dennis Carter Student Athlete Scholarship will be awarded before the end of the 2023-24 academic year to recognize the student athletes’ accomplishments on and off the field. The scholarship will go to the recipients’ respective 4-year or 2-year college or vocational school to help defray the cost of attending a higher education institution. Qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

WHAT IS IT?

  • One $1,000 scholarship for a male high school athlete

  • One $1,000 scholarship for a female high school athlete

ELIGIBILITY

  • High School Seniors attending a public or private school in the City of Lynchburg or Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford or Campbell counties who will attend a 4-year or 2-year college or a vocational school in the immediate fall academic semester following high school graduation.

CRITERIA

  • A combination of success on the athletic field, in the classroom and in the community

  • Determination of financial need

ABOUT DENNIS CARTER

Dennis Carter began his broadcasting career covering sports for WBTM/WAKG Radio in Danville, Virginia. A graduate of Danville Community College and Virginia Tech, he relocated to Lynchburg, Virginia, where he began his television career at WSET-TV, an ABC affiliate. There, Carter became Sports Director and Anchor and covered high school state championships, collegiate national championships and numerous professional sporting events. Serving for more than 37 years covering sports at the television station, he became the face of sports broadcasting in Central Virginia. Carter retired from WSET at the end of 2019. Less than a year later, Carter began serving as co-host of WLNI-Radio’s, The Sportsline and is the play-by-play voice for E. C. Glass Football.

Carter is an inductee of the 2020 Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and has been honored numerous times by both the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters and the Virginia Association of Broadcasters for outstanding sports coverage. In 2016, he received the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Meritorious Award for Best Sports Anchor of the Year at a Large Market Television Station. Carter has been recognized by the Lynchburg Area Sports Hall of Fame, Amherst County Sports Hall of Fame, Appomattox Sports Hall of Fame and Danville Community College Sports Hall of Fame.

PROCESS

  • In-person interviews will be conducted in April for finalists

  • Scholarship will be determined and awarded in early May
